12 – Plan Ahead With a Content Calendar

By Sarah Taffe on 30 March 20251 April 2025

Part 12 – Social Media Back to Basics Series.

One of the biggest reasons small business owners struggle with social media is not knowing what to post. A content calendar takes away that stress and replaces it with clarity.

A content calendar is simply a plan for what you’re going to post and when. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a basic calendar with key themes, dates, or post ideas written down in advance can help you stay consistent and avoid last-minute panic.

Here’s what a simple content calendar can include:

  • Weekly content themes (e.g. tips, testimonials, product highlights)
  • Relevant awareness days or seasonal content
  • Promotional dates for your business (launches, sales, events)
  • Pre-written captions or image ideas
  • Notes on content pillars to rotate through

Planning ahead also allows you to:

  • Batch-create content when you’re feeling inspired
  • Schedule posts using tools like Meta Business Suite, Later, or Buffer
  • Stay consistent even when things get busy
  • Build a content strategy rather than posting reactively

A calendar gives you structure, which creates freedom. You don’t have to waste energy each day deciding what to post. You can focus on the bigger picture and use social media more intentionally.

You can use whatever format works best for you – a spreadsheet, a notebook, Google Calendar, or a planning tool. The key is that it works for your brain and your schedule.

If you’re juggling a lot and want to simplify your approach, a content calendar is one of the best tools to get in place.
